Have you ever dreamed of an easier way to split a restaurant bill, to split the fare for a taxi, or to pay their share when buying a gift for the band? When you do not have cash, Facebook Payments can help.
All you need is your smartphone, internet connection, and of course Facebook account. However, before you send your first payment to a friend (or several friends) through Messenger, you must set up billing itself through Facebook.
Follow these instructions to set up your preferred payment method and start sending money to friends.
Payments via Messenger are currently only available to users in the United States. Facebook has since picked up the service of the two European countries (the USA and France), where it was available.
Add a Payment Method
Facebook offers several different payment methods, but only the US debit cards now specifically work with the payment function through Facebook’s Messenger. Support for credit cards and PayPal can be added in the future.
Before you begin, make sure that both you and your friend, to whom you are sending money, have the right to use Facebook Payments in Messenger.
- Have a Facebook Account
- Live in the US
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a debit card, Visa or MasterCard, issued by a US bank
- Select your preferred currency in US dollars
- Not be disconnected from the sending or receiving of money on Facebook
If you can tick all of the above requirements, you can proceed to set up the first payment method in your application or on your desktop online.
In the Facebook mobile app
- Log in to your Facebook account and click the hamburger icon (the three horizontal lines that some consider similar to hamburger) in the bottom menu.
- Scroll down, click “Settings and Privacy”> “Settings” and then click on “Payments” under “Account Settings.”
- Click “New Credit or Debit Card” to add your debit card in the US, enter your card details in the appropriate fields, and click “Save”.
- add a PIN code if you wish to be entered each time you want to send money, so you can view the transaction before sending it. Click “the PIN” on the tab “Payment settings” to enter the 4-digit number, and then enter it again to confirm and turn it on.
On Facebook.com
- Log in to your Facebook account and click the down arrow in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Select “Settings” in the drop-down menu, then choose “Payments” in the left sidebar.
- Select “Account Settings” at the top of the screen, and then “Add payment method.” Enter the details of their debit cards in the United States in the specified field and click Save.
Once your payment method has been added successfully, you should see it in the list of “Payment methods.”
Open the chat room and click on “Payments”
Once you’ve added a payment method, it became very easy to figure out how to safely and securely send money to a friend on Facebook using Messenger or via the website Facebook.com application. Payments are not stored on Facebook and go directly to the recipient’s bank account associated with his debit card.
According to Facebook, you will not be charged for sending (or receiving) money. Despite the fact that the money is sent immediately, it may take 3 to 5 business days before the payment will appear in the recipient’s bank account.
